Gal Gadot Says Hollywood’s Push for Stars to Condemn Israel Contributed to Snow White’s Box Office Struggles
Israeli actress Gal Gadot says she was subjected to death threats after her Snow White co-star Rachel Zegler publicly voiced support for Palestine.
Gadot linked the film’s underperformance at the box office to what she described as “intense pressure” in Hollywood for celebrities to criticize Israel following the October 7 attacks.
While promoting the movie, Zegler shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) thanking fans for the trailer’s 120 million views, before adding: “And always remember, free Palestine.”
The post quickly drew backlash. Producer Marc Platt reportedly traveled to New York to meet with Zegler, while his son Jonah later branded her comments “immature” and blamed them for the movie’s poor reception.
According to the Jerusalem Post, Gadot told Israeli talk show The A Talks that she “really enjoyed filming” and even working alongside Zegler, but admitted she had expected Snow White to be “a huge success.” Instead, she said, events after October 7 “changed the atmosphere” and the industry placed “a lot of pressure on celebrities to speak out against Israel,” which she believes “greatly affected” the film’s performance.
Disney reportedly increased security for Gadot after she began receiving threats in the aftermath of Zegler’s post.
The live-action remake, directed by Marc Webb, was already facing negative buzz prior to release, including criticism over its handling of the Seven Dwarfs. Actor Peter Dinklage previously called the project “f***ing backwards,” questioning its approach despite casting a Latina actress in the lead role.
Despite a production budget of around $270 million, the film earned about $205 million worldwide — falling short of expectations. Reviews were largely unfavorable, with The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw describing it as “exhausting awful.”
Gadot, who served as a combat fitness instructor in the Israel Defense Forces during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon war, has remained outspoken on global reactions to the conflict. Speaking at an Anti-Defamation League summit in 2024, she expressed shock at demonstrations that appeared to celebrate or excuse violence by Hamas.
